You hear about diabetes constantly these days, but what is it? Diabetes is a disease of the pancreas and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

The pancreas is not able to produce sufficient amounts of insulin, a hormone that is needed to control glucose, a sugar in our blood streams, to be absorbed into our cells for energy.

There are two main types of diabetes, type 1, IDDM or insulin-dependent-diabetes-mellitus and type 2, NIDDM or non-insulin-dependent-diabetes-mellitus.

There is little you can do except take insulin for type 1 diabetes. However the majority of diabetics are type 2.
