Fat Loss 4 Idiots is a popular internet based dieting system.  Does it actually work?

HOW IS THE DIET DESIGNED?

The Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet is based on an approach called “calorie shifting”.   Calorie shifting distributes your daily intake of calories into smaller, more frequent meals.  You are asked to eat 5-6 smaller meals in place of 3 heavy ones.  In this way, they say, you don’t store new fat and you burn up the fat you currently store.

The site outlines how the calorie shifting approach is different than regular diets you may have tried (low fat, low carb, and low calorie).  

They say low-calorie doesn’t work because dramatically reducing your calorie intake causes your body to lower its metabolism.  With a slowed down metabolism, you cannot lose fat.

Low-fat diets fail, they say, because people end up eating more of the low-fat alternative than they would of the regular product.

And low-carb diets are not a good idea, they say, because they produce such strong cravings that it is very difficult to stick to the diet.

The Fat Loss 4 Idiots approach is to have you eat a regular healthy amount of calories (this way your metabolism isn’t allowed to slow down) and a regular healthy number of carbohydrates and fats (so you do not get uncontrollable cravings.)

DOES IT REALLY WORK?

The Fat Loss 4 Idiots dieting system is a HIGHLY effective method to shed pounds, IF you can commit to following the plan.  The biggest reasons diets don’t work is because people stop following the programs a couple of days in.  This happens when the system is very complicated or overly restrictive.

No.  First, you need to be able to access the internet on a regular basis.  You will need to work with the “diet generator” to design you meals.

Second, if you feel you may need an actual person to motivate and push you, this diet is not for you.  The system is laid out simply and is easy to follow but it is not the same as having a live counselor.  If you feel you need a coach, Weight Watchers or a similar system is the way to go.
